Process

Drawing with light before drawing walls

Why every project starts with a sun study and a single section, not a floor plan.

Timber-lined hall with a window onto the trees and an open stair

Before we draw a single wall, we draw the sun. Where does it reach the site at eight in the morning in March, and at six in the evening in June?

What a sun study shows

  • Where the low winter sun reaches furthest into the plan.

  • Which rooms get evening light, and which stay cool in summer.

  • Where a neighbour, a tree or a slope will cast a shadow.

The answer decides where the table goes, and the table decides the rest of the plan.

A floor plan drawn first puts rooms where they fit. A section drawn first puts them where the light is.

Then the section

One cut through the house, drawn by hand, with the sun angles for the four seasons. It is the drawing we show a client first, long before a plan or a render.
